Baby Boomers Still Got IT!

I made a reference that baby boomers are ‘seasoned’. When I make that reference, I am referencing the foundational values they helped build said organizations. “Considering the generational challenges, baby boomers are stereotyped with the thought that “older workers not willing to learn new stuff, is unfair”, said Bidwell. Where he further mentioned that “baby boomers go out of their way to prove that they are keeping up by learning new things” – (Wharton, 2018) They come to me, looking to bring new flavors that are being sought by their employers, such as the utilization of technology trends. They suffer in silence but think enough outside the box to at the very least, be open and honest to share these devalued emotions they are imposing upon themselves. Which is not typical for these particular professionals. I am often, half their age. This is what makes me appreciate what I do more with each engagement. They always leave the session feeling renewed; at least with having some fresh possibilities in their thoughts.

I do not know what it takes to teach every father how to use his smartphone. However, I do find myself smiling when my mother sends me an article; via text, when she uses conference calling (after she thought she did not know how), and how she can use the video chat. An additional example is when I have a baby boomer client that finds delight in my guidance. But I would certainly know that they are able to a better season or two to a batter I proud myself of. I can only imagine the endless things they can teach me; as I often find myself learning from them as well.

I do agree that there are a lot of areas that not all people feel comfortable working in. I have had clients decide to branch off on their own; after 30 years of service to start their own company instead of retiring. This was due to not feeling comfortable in an environment that they have known to be comfortable for most of their lives. Although it may seem like a measure of being defeated, it can be respected when one realizes it is time to move on. That can seem to be a way of letting our egos get the best of us; however, it always shows being receptive to another means of change – thinking outside of the box.
